Do you make music on a Mac? Did you know that the next major MacOS version will remove support for Intel applications and plugins? Will your digital studio break or not? Find out in this video:
Want to skip straight to how you can check if you’re affected and know what you’re doing?
Use the command file.
/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST> file Addictive\ Keys.vst/Contents/MacOS/Addictive\ Keys
Addictive Keys.vst/Contents/MacOS/Addictive Keys: Mach-O universal binary with 2 architectures: [x86_64:Mach-O 64-bit bundle x86_64] [arm64]
Addictive Keys.vst/Contents/MacOS/Addictive Keys (for architecture x86_64): Mach-O 64-bit bundle x86_64
Addictive Keys.vst/Contents/MacOS/Addictive Keys (for architecture arm64): Mach-O 64-bit bundle arm64
If your VST has an ARM64 version, you’re safe (like in the example above). x86_64 is Intel, and i386 is Intel 32 bit. Multiple binaries with support for different architectures can exist in the same application (again, like in the example above).
