In a perfect world you’re in a band, and you are playing your own songs. In a not perfect world sometimes you’re in a band that plays covers. In the real world, sometimes you’re not even in a band… I’ve just started rehearsing with another guitarist. It’s a lot of fun, and we’re looking for a bass player and a drummer. In the meantime we’re playing covers of our favorite songs (choices of which are remarkably alike). So we need a backtrack with drums and bass. That’s not extremely hard to come by, just export a Guitar Pro file to MIDI and apply your favorite VSTs.
However, wouldn’t be even more fun with original vocals? Answer is yes, of course. There are some original backtracks without guitars available on the web. I think most of them are ripped from Rock Band and Guitar Hero. It’s very unlikely they are legal and they are not available for very many tracks.
I’d be happy to pay for original, official multitrack backing tracks, where you can exclude parts you play yourself. That and an official tab in Guitar Pro format, the perfect cover-maker’s kit!
With the risk of copyright infringement allegations, here’s a cover I made with an original backtrack of The Trooper:
